Male Nipple Reduction

Overview: Nipple reduction is an effective procedure, performed in order to reduce excessive projection or decrease the circumference of the nipple. It is very common in both men and women to have excess tissue in the nipple area due to genetics, hormones, aging, trauma, or breastfeeding/pregnancy (for women). As well as it is completely normal and very common for you to have different sized, shaped, or colored nipples than others. Which is why this is a fairly common procedure for those who are self-conscious of the size and shape of their nipples. The nipple region of the breast plays a big role in the appearance of your breasts, just like every other unique part of the body. With this procedure you can effectively correct small asymmetrical details making a big difference in the appearance of your breast.

What to expect: This surgical procedure takes place in the office and lasts around one hour depending on your unique needs. Only local anesthesia will be used; thus you will be awake and conscious for the duration of the procedure. Local anesthesia means the nipple area will be injected with numbing in order to limit and potential pain.

For a nipple reduction there are 2 types of incision techniques: the wedge or flap. Which is used is dependent on your anatomy and will be determined during your consultation, prior to the procedure. In the wedge technique a wedge-shaped piece is cut off the top of the nipple and sides of the nipple are attached together. While, in the flap method an incision is made around the base of the nipple and excess nipple tissue is removed creating a flap of which is sewn down, shortening the projection and size of the nipples.

Once our skilled surgeon, Dr. Khalifeh,  has removed the excess nipple tissue and the incisions have been closed, gauze dressings will be placed over the operated area which will ensure that your breasts are protected and held in the proper position for the healing process.

What is recovery: Since this is considered a minimally invasive procedure the recovery period generally lasts about 6 days. For the first 1-2 days, after surgery, patients should plan to not shower/bathe. During the first 2 weeks after surgery patients should plan to limit  touching the operated area. At the end of the 2 week mark you are able to go back to your regular daily activities. It is important to note that bruising, numbness, swelling, or tenderness of the area is to be expected for a few days. You will not see your final results till the 2 week mark.

Am I a candidate: Those who are generally in good health, who feel self conscious of their enlarged nipples are generally  considered exceptional candidates for this procedure. Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have stretched nipples, any women with nipples that did not return back to pre-pregnancy size following breastfeeding, or individuals born with puffy or protruding nipples can experience a boost in confidence and exceptional results from this procedure.

Permanence: The result of your nipple reduction is permanent.

Difference between the nipple and areola: The nipple is the small projection in the center of the breast of which is connected to the mammary glands. While the areola is the area of dark-colored skin surrounding the nipple.   We have different procedures for decreasing the size of the areola itself, which you can find by clicking here.
