In this site, I want to describe and discuss all aspects of Gynecomastia Surgery, not just the positive ones, so that you can make an informed decision. One of the risks (very common to a certain degree) of gynecomastia surgery is contour irregularities. Smooth natural looking results are the goal with every gynecomastia surgery. Some contour irregularities, or disruption of the smoothness, can and does occur, to a certain extent, with all surgeries. Your results after gynecomastia surgery are not the same as having been borne without the problem. My goal is to minimize contour irregularities. with that said……
here’s a patient shown before starting his gynecomastia journey.
we performed awake gynecomastia surgery, and he came in for a follow up at the six-week mark. here’s his front view at the six-week mark. Already, he feels much more confident and happy. Note the smoothness.
note that his results at rest are very natural, his skin is very regular, and the scar is almost imperceptible. to bring out the contour irregularities, I asked him to flex his muscles. flexing the muscles pulls on the skin/attachments, which are most significant under the areola.
in this image, we can see the contour irregularities that are typical of gynecomastia surgery. To reduce them, and the reason they don’t show at rest, which is the most important part, we performed a fat flap to build the cushion beneath the areola. Sometimes contour irregularities can exist even at rest. Some surgeons leave some gland behind, which does minimize this issue but increases the chance of recurrence and decreases the flatness obtained at rest.
At six weeks, the contour irregularities are more visible. with gentle massage, they will improve as the scar attachments loosen. Will they disappear completely? unlikely. When deciding whether to have surgery or not, you need to evaluate these things. Given his before picture, and given his results in the most natural state, rest, he of course is happy with his gynecomastia results.
