1. Understanding Gynecomastia and the Cost of the surgery

I specialize in male chest contouring and gynecomastia correction. The cost of gynecomastia surgery is an important consideration. This page breaks down what goes into the price of gynecomastia surgery, helping you make a confident, informed decision. I do appreciate that a big expense like that, especially early on in life, is difficult for some.

2. How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost in Washington DC?

The cost of gynecomastia surgery in my Washington DC practice generally ranges between $7,200 to $9,000 for I would say 80% of the cases. Other more specialized cases may be more. The cost depends on the extent of tissue removal, the technique used, and some case-specific attributes to each case.

For example:
Liposuction-only cases are very rare and in general, while they can be inexpensive at locations such as Sonobello, they do not lead to good patient satisfaction.
Very localized puffy nipple cases take the least amount of time and therefore can be on the lower end of the range ($7000–$7400).
Moderate to severe cases that require gland excision and liposuction contouring are priced higher due to increased surgical complexity and operating time.

The surface area of the distribution of the tissue also matters: if the amount of tissue occupies less of the chest, it is easier. Some guys don’t have a lot of tissue but the “footprint” of the tissue is all over the chest and this adds a lot of complexity.

Intermediate-sized areolas are the easiest to work with. When the areola is ultra small, the access point is tiny and these cases take longer. Similarly, when we have very dilated areolas, the fat flap technique is a bit more challenging.

Skin elasticity: Again, middle of the road is easier. If the skin is very loose, the patient may require excision. If the skin is super tight, retraction/visualization becomes more complex.

Skin thinness: Thin skin (with stretchmarks) has fragile underlying fat and is more difficult to work.

Breast material: A localized rubbery mass of gynecomastia is easiest to extract as compared to more fatty and widely distributed tissue.

During your private consultation, we will give you a personalized quote based on your anatomy, aesthetic goals, and whether you prefer local anesthesia (in-office) or general anesthesia (at a surgical center). You can also send us photos of your chest to info@gynecomastiasurgeon.org, and we will evaluate your photos and get back to you.

3. What Other Factors Affect the Cost of Gynecomastia Surgery Across Different Practices

Each patient’s chest is unique, so the cost can vary depending on several factors:

Surgeon’s Expertise and Reputation: Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive gynecomastia experience ensures safe, natural results. Dr. Khalifeh has performed over two thousand male chest contouring procedures with a focus on precision and aesthetics.
Type of Anesthesia: Procedures under local anesthesia in the office are generally more affordable than those performed under general anesthesia at a surgical facility.
Facility Fees: Accredited surgical centers or hospitals have their own associated fees.
Postoperative Care: Compression garments and follow-up visits are typically included in most quotes.
Complexity or Revision Cases: Secondary or corrective procedures may require more time and technical skill.

4. What’s Included in the Gynecomastia Surgery Quote

Your gynecomastia quote includes:
Surgeon’s professional fee
Operating room or facility fees
Anesthesia costs (none if local anesthesia)
Compression garment(s)
Postoperative visits for 90 days post surgery

5. Does Insurance Cover Gynecomastia Surgery?

In most cases, insurance does not cover gynecomastia surgery, as it’s considered a cosmetic procedure. However, if the enlargement is due to a glandular or hormonal condition that causes pain or functional issues, coverage may be possible under certain plans. We encourage you to check with your insurance company directly. You will also need to obtain the tests they require and meet certain thresholds prior to approval.

Can I use my HSA (Health Savings Account) plan to pay for gynecomastia surgery?

A health savings account (HSA) is a great way to pay for surgery as it allows you to pay with pre-tax money. An FSA account also works in a similar way.

6. Financing & Payment Options

Patients may pay via major credit cards, HSA/FSA accounts, or through third-party financing partners such as CareCredit.
Our team is happy to provide cost estimates and walk you through your options during consultation.
